Sustainable Funeral Flowers FAQ for St Albans

Please reach me at sustainableflowersbyalison@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

I specialise in sustainable funeral flowers. It's a focus that came from personal experience: as a keen gardener and cut flower grower myself, I was disappointed by the funeral flowers I chose from an online catalogue for my dad's funeral, and by how little thought had gone into their environmental impact for a man who was a lifelong gardener. That led me to learn about the cut flower industry, imported stems, floral foam and single-use plastics, and to do something different. Alongside funeral work, I'm also happy to create personal flowers for intimate weddings, special birthdays and small events.

Funeral flowers can be delivered directly to a St Albans based funeral director, or collected from my studio at an agreed time. If you're also looking for a small amount of flowers to dress the church or the wake, just get in touch to discuss.

Please get in touch as early as you can so I can discuss your options and have everything ready in good time. I understand funerals are often arranged quickly, so do reach out even at short notice and I'll do everything I can to help.

Every tribute is bespoke and unique to you, so prices vary depending on your requests, but the following is a useful guide. All costs are agreed with you before any payment is required.

  • 3ft casket/coffin spray: from £255
  • 4ft casket/coffin spray: from £340
  • Large sheaf arrangement: from £250 (a flat-back, out-of-water arrangement that can be the main tribute, and can be made in sections for family members to take home)
  • Small sheaf arrangement: from £100 (better suited to accompany other arrangements)
  • Wreaths: from £220
  • Partly flowered hearts: from £120
  • Sympathy cross: from £250
  • Vases, baskets or other bespoke items: from £150

All costs are agreed with you before any payment is required, so there are never any surprises. Nothing is charged until you're happy with what's been discussed. Payment is by bank transfer.

I offer coffin and casket sprays, sheaf arrangements, wreaths, crosses and hearts, as well as bespoke tributes. If your loved one had a favourite basket, garden trug, pair of boots or another personal item you'd like incorporated into their tribute, I'd be glad to include it.

A wreath is a circular tribute, traditionally laid on the coffin or displayed at the service. A casket or coffin spray sits along the top of the coffin. A sheaf is a flat-back, out-of-water arrangement that can act as the main tribute and even be divided into sections for family to take home. I'm always happy to talk through what would feel right.

Yes. Every arrangement is made without single-use plastics or floral foam, so it's either fully compostable or uses reusable containers that can be returned to me or kept by the family if they belong to you or your loved one.

Yes, and I'd love to. If you or your loved one has garden flowers or foliage you'd like included, or a personal item such as a favourite basket, trug or pair of boots, I'd be very happy to build it into the design. It's one of the things that makes these tributes genuinely personal.

Yes, this is very common. Many families ask for donations to a chosen charity in lieu of flowers, while still choosing a single family tribute for the coffin. There's no minimum order value, so the tribute can be as simple or as generous as feels right. I'm happy to talk this through with you.

There's no set rule. Many people keep it simple, such as "With love, [name]" or a short personal message. If you'd like help wording it, just ask when you place your order.

Yes. Funeral flowers are regularly delivered directly to St Albans based funeral directors, and I'm happy to coordinate with them so tributes arrive on time and exactly as arranged.

Yes. I use seasonal flowers and foliage sourced from UK growers, and from my own garden where possible. No imported flowers, no floral foam and no single-use plastic. It's a deliberate choice on every arrangement, not a marketing label.

I work with the flowers, herbs and foliage available at the time of year, always aiming for the best quality UK-grown blooms. Out of season (roughly October to February) I may also incorporate dried flowers into the design, and I'll always discuss this with you first.

Yes. If you're planning a beautiful, intimate wedding and would like personal flowers for the day, such as bouquets, buttonholes or flowers for your hair, please get in touch to discuss.

Yes. Perhaps it's a special birthday or a small party and you'd like some garden-style floral arrangements. Get in touch and I'll talk through what you have in mind.

There are no catalogues to click through and no standard packages, and there's no minimum order value. We talk, I listen, and then I create something bespoke that reflects your loved one or occasion. Every tribute is discussed and agreed with you, including cost, before any work begins.

You can email sustainableflowersbyalison@gmail.com or call 07761 404411. Because this runs around an existing job, if a call is missed please leave a voicemail, text or email and I will be in touch as soon as possible.

I work from a garden studio in St Albans, Hertfordshire. It's a small, personal operation, and deliberately so. From here I cover St Albans and the surrounding Hertfordshire towns and villages, including Harpenden, Wheathampstead, London Colney, Bricket Wood, Chiswell Green, Sandridge, Redbourn and the villages in between. Funeral flowers are delivered directly to St Albans based funeral directors or collected from my studio at an agreed time. If you're nearby and unsure whether I can reach you, just ask.

Yes. Funeral flowers can either be delivered directly to a St Albans based funeral director or collected from my studio at an agreed time.

I source from UK growers and, where possible, from my own garden. Nothing is imported, so there are no air miles on your flowers.

It's a small, personal operation with no catalogues or standard packages. Every tribute is a conversation first, made sustainably with seasonal, UK-grown flowers, no foam and no unnecessary plastic, and it can include flowers or a personal item from your loved one's own home or garden. Beautiful, natural, and made with genuine care.
